Holy cow - I’ve won a major award!
In one of my oddest high school moments, after being summoned to the school office over the p.a. was handed a fancy certificate complete with seal and calligraphy congratulating me on my service with the local Special Olympics. What was strange, besides them misspelling my name As Dare Markland, was that I’d never volunteered or been associated with the Special Olympics in any way, nor ever even considered it. Regardless, receiving that award for doing nothing has always held a place in my heart - let’s just call it special.
A couple hours ago, I was reminded of the above story after being honored at the LA Weekly Theatre Awards for Best Musical. Along with the cast and crew of “HAiR,” I was given a certificate for my contributions to the production… I designed the program and promotional fliers. I never knew that such participation would end up with any sort of award, and I’m not going to take credit for the awesome production. I’m definitely much prouder of it than my undeserved Special Olympics honor, but I can’t begin to compare myself with the hours of work the cast, producers, and crew put into the show.
That said, I have to admit that the program (warning - giant .pdf) was pretty badass. The postcard flier was pretty neat too.
More importantly though, a big heavy inscribed plaque was award to my gorgeous girlfriend Claire who was an associate producer on the show. I’d argue that she was an actual producer of the show, but the important thing is that her efforts were recognized at a big gala award ceremony and she has a trophy with her name on it.
